As stated by Lee, et al.(2021) Employee motivation can get affected by many aspects and those influencing factors can be categorized into three aspects.

  1. Human Related factors
  2. External Factors
  3. Work-nature related factors.

In the aspect of human related factors, human’s intrinsic values such as person’s benefits and income, personal goals and objectives, skills, attitudes and abilities are taken into the consideration (Lee, et al., 2021). External factors out of three major influencing factors accounts for the company corporate culture and the HR policies of the entity. Finally, work nature related concepts on employee motivation such as rewards and benefits, motive to work, attractiveness to work and the ability to meet the responsibilities of the job role (Lee, et al., 2021) (Hosseini, 2014).

Expanding the ideology of Lee, et al.(2021) on the concept of factors affecting employee motivation, Perry & Porter (1992) has introduced four factors that has an direct impact on the employee motivation of an entity, namely, Individual characteristics, Job characteristics, work environment characteristics and external characteristics.

Following are the factors that affect employee motivation.

·       Rewards and benefits

Monetary benefits such as salary and other total incentive package have acted as the most motivating factor of employees (Hossain & Hossain, 2012). Furthermore, the monetary benefits not solely motivate employees but the non-monetary benefits due to the high variety of needs of employees (Wanjihia , 2016) The rewards for employees include the monetary rewards such as increases in salaries, promotions, and incentives etc. meanwhile the non-monetary rewards including health, welfare and training etc. (Wanjihia , 2016) . Akthar, et al.(2014) states that there is a positive impact on employee motivation from the financial rewards.

·       Development & Growth

Proper training and development, skills development, providing growth opportunities as an entity to its employee is a major source of employee motivation where it provides the ability to achieve self-actualization goals and self-esteem of employees (Hossain & Hossain, 2012). Supporting the relationship between the training & development and employee motivation Hanaysha & Hussain (2018) has revealed that there is a significant relationship among training and motivation and highlights that job training is the main factor that influence employee motivation (Hammond & Churchill, 2018).

·       Job satisfaction

As defined by Cole & Kelly (2011) job satisfaction is an attitude of a person or a internal state that is related with the working environment of the employee and the working experiences. A significant positive relationship among the job satisfaction and employee motivation is found by Wanjihia (2016) and supported by the conslusion of research carried out by Hosseini (2014) on the topic of Factors affecting employee motivation.

·       Employee empowerment

Employee empowerment is a key concern in retaining the skilled labor in the business which grants the authority to employees to making decisions relating to their job, giving them power and authority combined to responsibility and accountability (Hanaysha & Hussain, 2018). Employee empowerment is a key driver to organizational success (Hanaysha & Hussain, 2018). Cole & Kelly (2011) claims that employee empowerment causes a source to employee motivation and resulted to a positive relationship with the superiors of employees due to the trust on employees by superiors.

·       Supervisor relations and communication

A good communication between the operational employees and the immediate supervisor is a reason that causes the work satisfaction. A bad relationship or bad feelings related to supervisory staff of employees may result a drop in employee performance and to lack of motivation within employees (Hossain & Hossain, 2012). Supervisor relations can be identified another source of employee motivation by the ways of supervisor’s feedbacks which helps to improve the motivation and employee performance (Lai, 2009)
